History Comes Alive

The Social Studies content for Fifth Grade will be United States History and cover the years from the First Americans to present day. This scope is rather large, so the units will focus upon the essential information. For example, the American Revolution will revolve around ideas of justice, independence, patriotism, allegiance, and nation building. My objective is to make the students have a connection and appreciation for history. This can only be accomplished by teaching history through ideas and stories. As a historian, I wish to make history come alive in my classroom. The class will study primary documents (journals, articles, paintings, poems, and pictures) to understand the feelings and ideas of past people. Also, there will be an interactive research assignment to every history unit. It could be a debate, speech, song, poem, diorama, poster, or biography. More details on unit projects will be posted in the “Projects” section of the website.
